Worthy E. Bingaman Obituary

Worthy E. Bingaman, 81, passed away on February 12, 2025 at his home of 57 years in Coconut Creek, FL surrounded by his wife and children after a long struggle with various health issues.

Worthy was born to Percy Bingaman and Hazel Rathfon, on June 25, 1943 in Sunbury, PA.

He graduated from Selinsgrove Area High School in 1961 where he wrestled and was known for his intelligence and playful wit. He was a Boy Scout and lived by the motto "Be Prepared." In fact, he was known to always carry a pocket knife, and once had it confiscated (and returned) when he visited The Vatican in 2012.

In 1964, he married his high school sweetheart Karen Snyder of Freeburg, PA who had just graduated from Geisinger School of Nursing. Worthy graduated from Penn State University in 1965 with a B.S. in Physics and a minor in Computer Science. He started his career with IBM in Binghamton, NY as a computer programmer. He was transferred to Boca Raton, FL in 1968 and soon developed a passion for the ocean. He became an excellent boat captain, SCUBA diver and spear fisherman. What he loved most was catching lobster. He was happiest in the Florida Keys where he spent many vacations with his family including brother-in-law Stephen Bailey, sister-in-law Susan Bailey and their children Tiffany and Nicholas. He was also a master of making Margaritas.

Worthy was a devoted husband and father who adored his family. He was a whiz at math, a Mr. Fix-It and it seemed like there wasn't anything he couldn't do. Known to many as "Bing," he was always willing to help friends and neighbors with any kind of project. He was an avid football fan and especially loved cheering on his Nittany Lions as well as the Florida Gators and Miami Dolphins.

Worthy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Karen, daughter Amy of Deerfield Beach, FL, son Christopher of Atlanta, GA, brother David and sister-in-law Sherry of Easton, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Hazel Bingaman of Shamokin Dam, PA.

His wishes were to be cremated and scattered in the ocean. There will be a private family service.
