Willliam Skumanich (Bill) Obituary

William "Bill" Skumanich, 92, of Orange Street, Northumberland, passed away Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, in Nottingham Village.


Bill was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Wilkes-Barre, a son of Slovak immigrants, the late Peter and Mary (Scripp) Skumanich.


On Sept. 4, 1954, he married the former Carol J. Simmers who preceded him in death in 2012.


He was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School and later received an associate's degree in electrical engineering from Penn State.


He proudly served with the Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Bennington until his honorable discharge. He was a member of the American Legion Post 44, Northumberland and the VFW Post 1532, Sunbury.


Mr. Skumanich retired in 1994 after 39 years of service from PPL as a distribution technician.


Bill was very active in his community including lifetime membership in the Northumberland Hook & Ladder, Northumberland No. 1 and Americus Hose Co. As a member and former president of the Northumberland Kiwanis he actively worked the pierogi stand during Pineknotter Days. He participated in the Northumberland Bicentennial in 1972. Bill was also an active member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Northumberland, Sunbury Social Club, Sudico for 50 years and the "Ponderosa Crew". He was awarded Pineknotter of The Year in 2011 for his tireless community service.


Bill was a member and served several times as past master of the Free & Accepted Masons Eureka Lodge No. 404, The York Rite, Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and Shriners International.


Mr. Skumanich is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William G. and Ora Skumanich of Allentown; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Mark Hoffman of Sunbury, Carol and William Engle of Northumberland, Amy and Dan Wieand of Danville; three grandchildren, Shelby Skumanich, Justin Engle and Cody Wieand; two great-grandchildren, Violet Engle and Dylan Stevens; and one brother, Andrew Skumanich of Boulder, Colo.


He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Mary Skumanich.


A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, where a Masonic service will begin at 11 a.m. followed by funeral services.


Burial with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
