Thomas McGrath Obituary

Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania - Thomas Frederick McGrath, 96, a longtime resident of Selinsgrove, entered into eternal rest on Nov. 25, 2025, at Brookdale Grayson View, Selinsgrove.

Born on Jan. 4, 1929, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Thomas and Evelyn (Fellows) McGrath. On Aug. 30, 1952, he married the former Genevieve "Jenny" Murphy, who preceded him in death.

Tom was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church, Selinsgrove.

Following high school, Tom earned a degree in chemistry from Franklin and Marshall College. He then earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he served 3 years in the United States Army. His first job after leaving the Army was as a chemist for American Cyanamid in Connecticut. In 1963, he joined the faculty of Susquehanna University as a chemistry professor.

During his 29 years as a professor at Susquehanna University, Tom inspired countless students with his passion for his field, his thoughtful mentorship, and his belief in the power of education to change lives. His classroom was a place of encouragement and exploration, where he challenged others to think deeply and approach the world with both rigor and compassion. As a member of the staff of the Office of Financial Aid for another 16 years, Tom's ability to connect with students and families reinforced the personal touches that characterize a Susquehanna education.

Tom was instrumental in developing the sciences at Susquehanna. He established the SU Chemistry Road Shows, and Science in Action Days, which introduced thousands of prospective students to SU. A legacy of Tom's is that he introduced a program of summer research for students. In 2015, former students established The Thomas F. McGrath Summer Research Partners Endowment to honor Tom's distinguished career. The Thomas McGrath Chemistry Scholarship Fund was established in 2000.

Tom is survived by two sons, Scot and Gary McGrath; two daughters, Janet McGrath and Linda Sweger; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Tom was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis; one sister; and two grandchildren.

A visitation to honor both Tom and Jenny will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, at V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 North High St., Selinsgrove, from noon to 2 p.m.

Burial will be private in Evergreen Cemetery, Selinsgrove.
