Shirley I. (Sheetz) Rowe Obituary

Shirley I. (Sheetz) Rowe, 91, of Selinsgrove, went to be with her Lord on the morning of April 1, 2021. She passed away peacefully at her home with her sons and daughter-in-law present.

Born Oct. 4, 1929, to the late Corbett and Leona Sheetz, she was delivered at the Sheetz family grocery store on the Isle of Que in Selinsgrove thus making her an original Isle of Que denizen. She married Ellwood E. Rowe, also from the Isle of Que, in 1952.

Shirley graduated from Selinsgrove Area High School in 1947 and attended both Elizabethtown and Lock Haven State Universities graduating with a degree in Physical Education. She initially taught Phys Ed at Selinsgrove High School in the early 60s and stepped down to raise her three children. Later in life she returned to work as an aide in the Remedial Reading at the Selinsgrove Middle School program from where she eventually retired. Shirley also spent many enjoyable summers as the camp director at Camp Mount Luther.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellwood Rowe; brothers, Wilfred, George, and Robert "Duffer" Sheetz; and daughter-in-law, Laura Rowe.

She is survived by her three children — son, Kim of Selinsgrove, son, Eric and wife Julie Kleinbauer of Selinsgrove, and daughter, Andrea and husband Carl Rodgers of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Eric Rowe, Emily Rowe and husband Sean Stewart, Sarah and Hannah Ross, Danilo Ortner, Patrick Stoll and wife Glenda, Kyle Rowe, and Guy Rowe; as well as five great-grandchildren, Miles and Oliver Stewart, Carli and Len Ortner, and Jaxon Rowe.

Having been born and raised on the Isle of Que, Shirley grew up and remained an active enthusiast of the Susquehanna River upon which she spent countless hours throughout her years with lifelong friend Mary (Herman) Bogar, her children, as well as her grandchildren. Her enjoyment of the Isle of Que also included skating at Little Norway, taking hikes up the canal bed, helping out at Sheetz Grocery, and reveling in the beauty of the river and island. She was deeply involved in the lives of her children and experienced great joy spending time with her grandchildren where she went to great lengths creating fun and exciting projects and activities for them to participate in. Shirley and the family spent many summers vacationing at Mac's cabin in Surf City, NJ in addition to innumerable hours together on holidays and family gatherings. After her retirement she and friends traveled the country camping and seeing the sights. Her current hobbies included playing cards with friends, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, staying in touch with friends, and staying as busy as a person can be.

She was an environmental activist as a member of the Susquehanna River Coalition and lifelong member of Sharon Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove.

Private graveside services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Selinsgrove.

A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.
