Olwen Joyce Anderson Obituary

The family of Olwen Joyce Anderson notes her passing on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024.


Mrs. Anderson was the daughter of Olwen and Mark Evans and the granddaughter of Rev. and Mrs. W. Barker Jones of Penycae, North Wales. She married Walter Eugene Anderson on Aug. 16, 1952. He died on Sept. 6, 1993.


Mrs. Anderson was born in Fountain Springs, Pa. and moved to Reading at an early age. She graduated from Reading Senior High School and attended the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her career in music, in addition to soloist at several churches, led to promoting male voice choirs of Wales which included The Rhos Choir Caernavon, Basingtoke (England) Male Voice Choir, Rhos Orpheus and Rhos Girls Choirs.


Interests other than music led her to teaching basic English and English as a second language. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Berks County Literacy. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and developed a "Learn to Swim" program for physically and mentally challenged children.


After moving to Selinsgrove in 1978, Mrs. Anderson served as music director at Bethany Evangelical Church, Sunbury and Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland. She continued to bring Welsh Choirs to Rooke Chapel at Bucknell University.


Mrs. Anderson was the past president of the National Welsh American Foundation and a trustee of the National Gymanfa Ganu (Sacred Singing) Association. She served the United Way for over 22 years and was honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award. She was a Past President of Selinsgrove Rotary and a former member of the board of Women In Transition. She was a lifetime member of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, the Snyder County Historical Society, the National Welsh American Foundation, and the Gymanfa Ganu Association.


Mrs. Anderson is survived by her children and their families; her son, Mark Roland David, his wife Erika, their children Gwen Kristine and Evan Mark; daughter Elizabeth Rose; and daughter Bronwen, her husband Michael Sanders and their children, Owen Michael and Gareth Edward.


The V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, Selinsgrove, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
