Kane, Pennsylvania - Nelson Aponte, 70, of Kane, Pa., passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025.
Born Aug. 29, 1954, in New York City, he was the son of the late Francisco Aponte and Santa Pabey-Aponte.
Nelson dedicated 25 years of service to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, retiring in 2007 as Associate Warden from the United States Penitentiary Leavenworth. Much of his career was spent at the United States Penitentiary Lewisburg, where he served as a Special Investigative Agent working numerous high profile cases. His professionalism and commitment earned him widespread respect within the Bureau of Prisons, where he formed many enduring friendships. Following his federal service, Nelson continued to serve his community as a Pennsylvania Constable for McKean County and as a Security Guard at the Kane Hospital.
In addition to his professional achievements, Nelson was a man of diverse talents and passions. He was a gifted artist who expressed himself through drawing and found joy in cooking, reading, and music-pursuits that enriched his life and brought happiness to those around him.
Nelson is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Aponte; his daughter, Vanessa Branch (Anthony) of Frederick, Md.; his cherished grandchildren, Evan and Letty Branch; former spouse and mother of his daughter, Iris Aponte of Brigantine, NJ. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Pabey (Verna) of Tucson, Ariz.; nephews, Jason Pabey (Amanda) of Angleton, Texas, and Richard N. Pabey (Melissa) of Covington, Ga.; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Peter Gonzalez Pabey.
A memorial service will be held at the Cummings Funeral Home in Kane at a later date, with Rev. Calvin Cook officiating.
