Mildred E. Noll Obituary
New Columbia, Pennsylvania - Mildred Elizabeth Noll, 96, of Main St., New Columbia, was born Aug. 16, 1928, and deceased June 25, 2025. Mildred was the wife of Curtis Noll for 71 years and had 3 sons, Terry, Rodney and Mark. Born Mildred Elizabeth Engle, she was one of 10 children of Jacob and Maude Troxell Engle and resided on Strawridge Road, Lewisburg, in the Dale Engle Walker Historical House. Her father, Jacob Engle, bilingual in German and English, owned and operated Engle's Dairy Store in Lewisburg. Her mother, Maude Shively Troxell Engle, was a primary school teacher.
Millie early in life held sales and management positions selling Sara Coventry and Judy Lee Jewelry. She and Audrey Heiser of rural Selinsgrove opened their own handbag business traveling to NYC and buying directly from the factory to sell at local shows and venues. Later in life, Millie sold mutual funds. Millie was also an accomplished artist. She studied painting under David Armstrong. She also was an accomplished wood plaque carver of beautiful animals such as bald eagles, raccoons and deer.
Millie had a special friend, Mary Ellen Blyler from Watsontown. She was a classmate that visited many times over the years and was especially helpful and thoughtful during Millie's waning years. Millie and Curtis were avid pinochle players, entertaining many family members, local friends, and friends from the Bureau of Prisons, often playing through the night hours. There was never a dull moment at the Noll house in those days. Millie and Curt took their boys to Ontario and Quebec, Canada, every summer in the 1960s for fishing, boating and to enjoy the lakefront atmospheres. Millie was not only an excellent cook but also every summer would have a huge fish fry of the lake trout, pike, bass and walleye caught in Canada. She was especially known for her secret batter mix that coated the fish.
In 1973, Millie and Curt traveled south to Statesboro, Georgia, to attend Rodney's graduation from Georgia Southern University and continued on to Disney World in Orlando, FL. Ten years later, they traveled to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, to visit Rodney who was one of 10 physical education instructors at Charlotte Amelie High School which had 3,200 students.
Curt retired from the Bureau of Prison as an officer in 1979. Millie and Curt traveled to the west coast in their motorhome in 1980 doing much fishing, collecting Indian artifacts, petrified wood, a few gold nuggets and a sibling great redwood tree planted behind the Noll estate. The tree is still standing and over 2 feet in diameter and 75 feet tall.
Millie shared a close relationship with her youngest brother Nevin Engle who was an electronic engineer on the Penn State Campus. She traveled to CA with Nevin in his brand new red 1962 Cadillac convertible. Nevin was involved with testing underwater submarine torpedoes on the west coast.
Millie and Curt traveled to Costa Rica in 1987 with relatives, Richard and Jean Noll Engle and other Bureau of Prison friends to explore the country, the culture and a fun vacation. Millie and Curt had a campsite and travel trailer on Seneca Lake in N.Y. where they spent much time during the summer fishing, playing pinochle, visiting the glass factories and enjoying retirement life.
Millie was a loving and caring mother and especially loved doting on her grandchildren Naomi, Nina, and Colby who are children of Rodney. Millie lived life to the fullest and will be remembered for her many achievements, accomplishments, her gracious personality and donating much time to civic organizations such as the PTA, New Columbia Bicentennial, and the local civic center in New Columbia. Millie was of the Lutheran faith and her and Curt sang in the choir. Millie was a dedicated church attender and believed in the Lord and eternity. There is a special place in heaven for Millie alongside her husband Curt (1924-2017) and her son Terry (1947-1964). Rodney feels so fortunate and blessed to have such loving and disciplining parents, 28 cousins, and a loving brother in Terry Lee.
