Mildred Lorena (Gemberling) Stroup Peacore Obituary

Selinsgrove, pa - Mildred Lorena (Gemberling) Stroup Peacore, 100, of Selinsgrove, passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2025, after a long and full life.

She was born on Oct. 26, 1924, in Kratzerville, a daughter of the late Cyril and Minnie Gemberling. A graduate of Selinsgrove High School, Mildred continued her education at the Reading School of Nursing, where she became a Registered Nurse through the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps program during World War II.

Her first nursing assignment was at the Pensacola Naval Hospital, where she cared for wounded WWII soldiers. It was there she met her future husband, Marine veteran Cecil Ford Stroup, whom she had cared for following his return from the South Pacific. They married shortly thereafter and shared their lives until Cecil's passing in 1996.

Mildred's nursing career spanned more than 45 years, during which she served in a variety of roles with compassion and dedication. She concluded her career with her retirement from Bucknell University.

In 2004, Mildred married her second husband, Larry Peacore, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. They enjoyed eight years of marriage until his passing in 2012.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lorena Stroup (1994); her first husband, Cecil Stroup (1996); her sister, Gladys Dagle (2008); and her second husband, Larry Peacore (2012).

Mildred is survived by her children: Philip Stroup and his wife Donna, and their daughter Rebecca Zaken and husband Michael; David Stroup and his wife Dawn Getgen, and their sons Ryan Stroup and his wife Erin Jaffke; Austin Stroup and his wife Savannah Rhoads-Stroup; Jon Stroup and his wife Miriam, and their daughters Makenzie Piestrak and husband Nathan; and Finian Stroup.

She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Caden and Adelyn Piestrak, children of Makenzie and Nathan.

Mildred will be remembered for her lifelong devotion to family, her service as a nurse, and her remarkable legacy of love, strength and care that will endure through the generations.

Per Mildred's request, there will be no funeral services. The family will gather privately at a later date for a small, intimate remembrance.

Memorial contributions may be made in her remembrance to the Living With Wolves organization or Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis Inc. (PACFI).
