Michael E. "Boney" Bonshock, 86, of Coal Township, passed away peacefully at Geisinger Medical Center on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after a brief illness.
Boney was born Nov. 9, 1938, at Shamokin Hospital. He was the son of the late Edward and Anna (Dudinskie) Bonshock. He was a graduate of Coal Township High School, Class of 1956.
Boney met the love of his life, Dolores (Pogozelski) Bonshock, in high school, and went on to marry her on Jan. 25, 1958, at St. Anthony's in Ranshaw. The couple spent a wonderful 63 years together before Dolores's passing on Jan. 16, 2022.
During his working years, Boney held numerous hands-on jobs, from Firestone Re-Tread, Eastern Industries Quarry, among others over the years. Post retirement, Boney went back to work (mainly for socialization purposes) at the Coal Township Recycling Center and the AOAA.
Boney was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Gowen City. On Sunday mornings, you can bet Boney could be found sitting in the back pew listening to every sermon. He was also a lifetime member of the Brady Fire Company, and a member of the East Cameron Fire Company and West Cameron Nimrods. You could be sure to find him waiting for the doors to open and be the first one inside every weekend. Boney was also a lifelong member of Sagon Rod & Gun Club, Renovo. "Camp" was Boney's happy place, always known to have his bags packed a week in advance.
Boney was known as a father and "Pap" to many, those blood related and those whom he met and took under his wing over the years. Boney and Pogey (as Dolores was known to some) never missed any of their kids, grandkids or great grandkids activities. If there was an event going on you could be sure to see them there, cheering the family on. If they weren't at family events, Boney and Pogey could be found out gallivanting or sitting around the kitchen table playing a competitive game of Phase 10.
Another one of his favorite past times was being an avid outdoorsman. Boney was a fisherman in his younger days and as he got older, he did any and all kinds of hunting that he was able to. Spring gobbler, bear season, deer season; he never missed an opportunity to get outdoors. To those who knew him, Boney could be described as a teacher, storyteller, family man, provider, among many other things. Thanks to Boney's teachings, most boys of the family are now able to partake in Soupie Making Weekend.
When Boney was at home watching TV, you could find him with a beer in hand, watching the Eagles or Phillies (shall we place bets now on a 2025 world series title?). Thanks to Boney, every family member and friend always had a shot glass of homemade apple pie in hand for toasts. In more recent years, if he wasn't home in the mornings, he was most likely out taking a valley ride with his best buddy and faithful companion Bella, or eating breakfast at Snyders.
Michael is survived by a sister, Vera (Bonshock) Blethen; four sons, Michael R. Bonshock and his fiance, Jennifer Kline, Kevin Bonshock, Keith Bonshock and his wife, Lisa, Greg Bonshock and his wife, Claire; daughters-in-law Sandy Bonshock and Terre Bonshock; a sister-in-law, Sandra Mrochek; nine grandchildren, Dennis G. Bonshock and his wife, Heather, Katie Ritz and her husband, Jeremy, Ryan Bonshock and his wife, Jenna, Eric Bonshock and his wife, April, Brianna Rodarmel and her husband, Mike, Alek Bonshock and his partner Nichole Villarreal, Olivia Houseknecht and her husband Connor, Kaia Bonshock, and Ava Bonshock; 10 great-grandchildren, Evan and Cameron Bonshock, Layla and Sadie Ritz, Aubrey, Garrett and Brynley Bonshock, Lily Sue and Booker Bonshock and Blair Bonshock; numerous nieces and nephews; his beloved dog and best buddy, Bella; and so many special friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolores Bonshock; parents, Edward and Anna; a son, Dennis Bonshock; a daughter-in-law, Sherri Bonshock; and brothers-in-law, Floyd Blethen and John F. Pogozelski.
