Mary Louise Izzo Obituary
Mary Louise Izzo, beloved grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, in Danville.
Born Nov. 28, 1946, in Brook, Indiana, Mary was the youngest of Darrel and Lucille Hamman's three children. She graduated with top honors from Brook High School and married her high school sweetheart, Richard Alexander, with whom she had two children, Angela Kaye and Kevin Richard. Tragically, Richard and his brother were killed in a car accident on their way to work and Mary became a widow at the age of 24.
Several years later, Mary met and married Robert Knorr of Rensselaer, Ind., who was divorced with two young children of his own, Joanna Christine and Kenyon Ted. In 1973, the couple moved to Lewisburg to live closer to Joanna and Kenyon who had moved with their mother Nancy Reitz (now Bastian) to her hometown of Sunbury. Mary gave birth to her third child Christina Lynn, completing the blended family of seven.
In 1982, the couple divorced, and Mary moved to Winfield with her three children, eventually making her way to Sunbury, where she supported and raised her children as a single mom. In 1998, Mary met Joseph Izzo of Danville, with whom she had a loving marriage until he lost his battle with lung cancer in 2007 at the age of 58.
Whether as a retail store clerk, a waitress, or a group home care provider, Mary was a reliable and dedicated employee. Quiet and mild-mannered with five children under the age of five, she was known to have the "patience of a saint."
An avid reader and an astute observer, Mary was a fountain of wisdom and a harbor of hope. She was a loyal friend, a trusted confidante, and a loving mom and grammy who enjoyed chocolate and cashews, Elvis Presley, and weekend yard sales.
In her later years, Mary led a quiet and fulfilling life surrounded by her loved ones, her cat Jasmine, Sudoku puzzles, and her extensive Coca-Cola collection.
Mary is survived by her children, Angela Carl, Kevin Alexander (Nicole), and Christina Dunbar (Corey); stepchildren, Joanna Listwak (Jeff) and Kenyon Knorr. She also leaves behind her sister, Joyce Conn, and nine grandchildren Logan, Blake, Bryce, Brianna, Kyle, Noah, Jayden, Drew, and Keira.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Izzo; parents, Darrel and Lucille Hamman; brother, John Hamman; brother-in-law, Joseph Conn; and former spouse, Richard Alexander.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Mary's Life to be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 42 W. Mahoning St., Danville, with Rev. Dawes J. Dunham officiating. Friends will be received from 11 to 11:45 a.m.
