Leah Katie Unger Obituary
Leah Katie (nee: Schreffler) Unger, 76, of Leck Kill, PA, peacefully passed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, January 16th, 2019. She was surrounded by the love of her daughter and caregiver when she made her final journey.
Born in Rebuck, PA, on December 23rd, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Harlan and Hilda (nee: Rothermel) Schreffler. She was a 1960 graduate of Mahanoy Joint High School (now Line Mt.). On April 29th, 1961, she married the love of her life, Rodney R. Unger. Their 52 year marriage ended with his passing in 2013.
She was a hard-working daughter, wife, and mother. She was a seamstress and worked in the Johnson Shoe Factory, Millersburg, Dalmatia Blouse Co., Mandata, Gratz Dress Factory, and City Shirt Company, Frackville, from which she retired in 2009.
Leah was a kind, generous, loving, and loyal woman. There is nothing she would not do for her family and friends. She and Rodney often and freely gave whatever they could to friends and neighbors who were out of work, ill, or having a run of bad luck. She would take others under her wing at work and make sure they learned the the tricks of the trade and had someone trustworthy in whom they could confide.
That love burned ever bright when it came to the devotion she showed to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She loved them more than life itself and she NEVER ended a phone conversation or visit without telling her "sweeties" that she loved them more and better!
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading the Bible and daily devotions, watching Penn State and New England Patriots football & Phillies and Pirates baseball, shopping (particularly QVC!), every holiday get-together (esp. Thanksgiving and Christmas) attending services at her beloved church, going to gospel concerts with Rodney and other members of their church family, flower-gardening, feeding and watching the birds, visits and phone calls with family and friends, and lavishing love and snackers on her beloved cats Hector and Thunder.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Darby & Tom McDonnell, Bloomsburg; son, Chuck Unger & his fiancé, Gloria Karasek, South Williamsport; beloved grandchildren Adam and Amanda Unger, Overlook; beloved step-grandchildren Spencer & McKenzie Karasek, South Willimasport; nephews Elwood Crossleny & Family, Casper, Wyoming; Eugene Crossley, Bloomsburg; niece Elaine Crossley-Dickinson & Family, Marietta, Georgia; former daughter-in-law, Diane Unger, Overlook; caregiver Kulubo "Kay" Wah, New Jersey; former caregiver Francis Effa, Shamokin; beloved cats Hector and Thunder; many loyal and devoted friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her cherished sister Shirley Crossley.
Viewing will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9:30 AM-11:00 AM at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Route 25, 1 mile west of Gratz, PA with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM with Senior Pastor Dr. David Bubb officiating. Interment will follow in Himmel's Cemetery, Rebuck.
The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions are suggested to Emmanuel Wesleyan Church Gratz, PA, Attn.: Leah Unger Memorial Fund.
Mama Leah...You are and always will be loved and cherished. It is difficult to imagine our lives without you in them, but we take comfort in the knowledge that you are now free of all your pain and physical limitations and you can reside in the arms of your loving Lord & Savior, along with Daddy, your beloved parents and sister. Love you More!
