John Alison Edwards
John Alison Edwards, 75, of 195 Meadow Green Drive, Mifflinburg, entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, at 8 a.m. at his home.
He was a resident of West Buffalo Township since September 2010, and prior to that had lived in Mifflinburg since 1972.
He was born Jan. 22, 1944, in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, a son of the late Lee Meck and Josephine Payne (Zeigler) Edwards. On June 18, 1966, in the former Wesley United Methodist Church, he married the former Janet Ann "Jan" Young who preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2010.

John was a 1961 graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg, a 1965 graduate of Shippensburg University with a bachelor of science degree, and a 1968 graduate of Shippensburg University with a master of science degree.
He taught in the Harrisburg school system from 1965 to 1967, continued as an educator in the Central Dauphin school system from 1968 to 1969 when he entered the military service.

John served his country in the U.S. Army from Sept. 22, 1969 until his honorable discharge as a sergeant at Fort Myer, Virginia on March 22, 1972. He served during the Vietnam Conflict with a tour in Nha Trang, South Vietnam working with a military intelligence group. While serving his country, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with two overseas bars, the Army Reserve Components Overseas Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device (1960).

He resumed his teaching career September 1972 in the Mifflinburg School District instructing in mathematics, science, and English until retiring December 2000.

He was a member of the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, the Thomas H. Clapham Post 410, American Legion, Mifflinburg, and proudly served on the honor guard for more than 30 years. Over the years, he regaled his friends with his vivid storytelling, many about his years as an army soldier.

After John retired from teaching, he spent many hours on the Bucknell University golf course. He also enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants, playing cards, and completing difficult crossword puzzles. An avid reader of novels, he especially enjoyed mystery writers John Sandford and James Patterson. He always purchased new books, then passed them on to friends who would take them into Mifflinburg's Herr Memorial Library as a donation from John.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Matthew J. and Josalyn M. Edwards of Hillsborough, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth E. "Betsy" and Adam T. Shipton of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Logan Matthew and Madison Rose Edwards, Sydney Janet and Luke Adam Shipton; brother, Joseph L. Edwards of Burlington, Wash.; and brother and sister-in-law, Earl E. and Cynthia (Johnson) Young of Brandon, Fla.

I was sadden to hear of your father’s passing. Stacey Brouse and I would play pinochle with your dad and Stan Nolan during mini-activity at the Middle School. We took his mini-activity many times even though we were to only to take it once. He always made sure we were there. As I write this , I’m smiling at the thought of the time he was late and we staked his hand with five 9s and a marriage for meld so he couldn’t throw in the hand. Oh my, was he complaining about the lousy hand. After we played the rest of the hand, we told him what we did and he laughed too. To imagine that two 8th graders could get one over on him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I alwa...ys held your parents in high regard and it was always great to catch up with them when we’d happen to run into each other.Read more
