George B. Faries, Jr., MD Obituary
Mechanicsburg, PA - George B. Faries, Jr passed away peacefully at Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg on Tuesday morning after a long illness. He was born in Lewisburg, PA, the son of George Sr. (also a physician) and Alice. His early years were shaped by his father's time serving with 29th Division during World War II. The family traveled first to Camp Shelby in Mississippi prior to his father's departure to the European Theater. Upon returning after the war, the family returned to Lewisburg where George Sr. became a general practitioner serving the community with remarkable kindness and generosity. These traits, as well as a career in medicine, would be shared by George Jr throughout his life.
George was president of his senior class at Lewisburg High and a member of the football team. He received his undergraduate degree at Bucknell where he majored in English. (His father told him he could attend any college he could walk to!) He was a member of the ROTC and then served in the Army after graduation. Having decided to attend medical school, he completed post-baccalaureate courses at the University of Pennsylvania, and then was accepted to Jefferson Medical College where he received his MD. While in Philadelphia, he met Mary Linn Grossman, also a Bucknell English major and the two were married in 1964. They moved to the Harrisburg area, where he completed training as a General Surgeon and practiced in that community for the next 5 decades.
George brought several medical innovations to Central Pennsylvania. He was the first physician to perform colonoscopy in the area and the first to perform ambulatory inguinal hernia repair. He served as the surgeon for a number of prominent citizens of the region and was deeply respected by his surgical colleagues and the staff he worked with. Two of his sons and one grandson followed his example and became surgeons as well.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and hiking. Several generations of Beagles were his partners in many of those activities. He was a wonderful singer and performed in many oratorios with the Grantham Oratorio Society, and two of his sons joined him in those efforts as well. He was also fond of the water and spent many hours sailing and canoeing. He built a number of beautiful wooden boats as well with the help of his children and grandchildren.
His early life experience while his father was away at war had a long-lasting impact. He carefully maintained his parents' correspondence and the photographs and notes his father had kept from before the D-day landing through the European campaign. He and his sisters and other family traveled to Normandy to participate in several June 6th commemoration services.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ann and Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife, Mary Linn, his sons Peter, Christopher and Mark as well as 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg. Viewing will be held Monday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Rolling Green Cemetery. To sign the online guest book, please visit www.malpezzifuneralhome.com
