Francis "Frank" J. Duffy Obituary

Frank Duffy, 87, of Snydertown, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025, at Nazareth Memory Care in Danville from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease.

Frank was born in Philadelphia, May 13, 1937. He was the son of the late Doctor Joseph Duffy and Mary Demsko Duffy, of Centralia.

He attended The Hill School, a preparatory school, in Pottstown where he learned to play ice hockey, ride horses, and play golf. He had the opportunity to play golf with Sam Sneed and Lee Trevino while a student. He left The Hill School his senior year and attended, and graduated from, Mount Carmel Area High School. He attended Saint Joseph's College in Philadelphia for one semester.

Frank married Melanie Becker on June 24, 1972. If you are old enough to remember, their wedding took place in the middle of the Agnes flood. In fact, June 24 was the first day in two weeks it didn't rain.

There is more to Frank's life than these few details. He had an adventurous and fulfilling 87 years.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force after leaving Saint Joseph's College, much to the chagrin of his father. Doctor Duffy hoped his son would follow in his footsteps. That was not to be. In a twist of fate, Frank served as a medic at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., during his four years in the Air Force. He performed physical examinations on some of the country's first astronauts.

After leaving military service, Frank sailed around the Bahamian Islands with a friend. He learned to scuba dive and became very proficient. He worked with others to lay an oil pipeline off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas. Frank had the opportunity to repair Jacques Cousteau's boat, the "Calypso," while in Nassau. After leaving the Bahamas, he lived in Miami, Florida, where he formed, "The Florida Frogmen," a scuba diving club.

Frank finally went home to Centralia. He was employed as a salesman by Pottsville Economy in Pottsville for a few years. Frank moved on to Academy Sports in Mount Carmel where he sold sporting goods for several years.

Frank was a hunter and fisherman. But he was a conservationist when it came to hunting. He only harvested specific waterfowl. His dream was to go on at least one big game hunt once in his life. That wish came true in August, 1971. He went to British Columbia, Canada. He harvested a full curl stone ram and a caribou. The pictures he took made it clear he was having an adventure of a lifetime.

Frank's next endeavor was raising Labrador Retrievers. He and his wife raised excellent field trial and hunting dogs. The breeding program soon turned into boarding dogs. "Duffy's Kennel" was born.

People came from near and far to board their precious four-legged members of the family with Frank Duffy. He had a way with animals. Frank could train difficult dogs with behavior problems and was a best friend to shy dogs. Not everyone that took their dog to Duffy got along with him. He was not very patient with owners that didn't want to learn how to take care of a dog or properly train it. The dog always came first with him.

Since Frank was an experienced scuba diver, it only made sense that his wife should learn, too. Melanie was very enthusiastic about learning the sport. Both of them began taking trips to the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas to explore the wonders of the underwater world. Frank was an excellent photographer above water and below. His pictures of underwater creatures and coral reefs were colorful and amazingly real.

The adventurous couple then moved on to riding motorcycles. Yes, both had a Harley. Short trips turned into longer and longer rides. Finally they decided to ride to South Dakota for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. They always rode out and left before the rally began. The traffic could get a little crazy during the actual rally. Frank and Melanie made the trip 13 times.

Then Frank's personality began to change. Little things at first, but enough that Melanie noticed. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease was made and nothing would change that or the inevitable outcome.

Eventually, Melanie was unable to provide the proper care for Frank at home and he was admitted to Nazareth Memory Care in October, 2022. The staff were wonderful to Frank and provided the best of care to him. Melanie greatly appreciates everything they did for him. He passed away in his sleep. He is at peace now, his final adventure.

Frank is survived by his wife of 52 years, Melanie. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Duffy Jacobs.

No services are planned in accordance with Frank's wishes. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the animal rescue organization of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut Street, Sunbury.
