Elizabeth Long Furia Obituary

Lewisburg, Pennsylvania - Elizabeth C. Long Furia, 62, of Lewisburg, was taken from us in the early hours of May 10, 2025, after a courageous battle with an aggressive type of biliary cancer. She passed into the after-life at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

Born in Chester, N.J. on Feb. 17, 1963, she was the daughter of Cecelia M. (Doyle) Long, of New York City, and the late William P. Long. She was married to Dr. John Furia, a practicing orthopedic surgeon at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital. Liz and John met and fell in love while studying abroad in Rome during their junior year in college. Together they celebrated 32 years of marriage, though they loved one another for 42 years.

Elizabeth, known as "Liz" to her family and friends, was a graduate of West Morris High School and earned her BFA in illustration at the Philadelphia College of Art. She was a gifted artist. Upon graduation, she began to work in the hospitality industry. From prior European travel experience, Liz grew passionate about creating seasonal, regional food. Her fascination with cooking grew stronger as she studied in Italy and served as an apprentice in France and the U.S. Liz honed her culinary skills in some of the finest restaurants in Philadelphia, New York and Houston before moving to Lewisburg in 1995.

In 1997 she opened Elizabeth's an American Bistro, the restaurant of her dreams, and an establishment that became, and still is, a beloved dining destination in central Pennsylvania. Chef Liz elevated the dining experience in Lewisburg. She, along with her dedicated staff, did so by infusing Elizabeth's with impeccable standards, meticulous attention to detail, welcoming ambiance and warm professional service. Elizabeth's was awarded Sante Magazine's Award of Excellence and received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence each and every year since 2002.

When she was not working, Liz enjoyed horseback riding, reading, gardening and travel. She loved the ocean and looked forward to visiting Narragansett, R.I. each summer. She enjoyed remodeling historic buildings and generously donated to multiple local and national charitable organizations as well as WellSpan Evangelical and Geisinger hospitals. Above all, she was a loving, kind and supportive wife, daughter, sister and friend.

In addition to her beloved husband and mother, she is survived by three sisters Jennifer Long, Kathleen Long and Sarah Ann Long, and a brother William H. Long.

Friends and relatives will be received on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from noon to 1 p.m. and from 6: to 8 p.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 814 Saint Louis St., Lewisburg, with Rev. Fred Wangwe officiating.
