He was born July 28, 1924, in Warrensville, a son of the late Frank and Esther Weiman Wright.
Donald graduated from Montoursville Area High School in 1943. A natural athlete, he was a standout on the school's baseball team and was timed in the 100 yard dash at under 10 seconds. In recent years, he and Aletha enjoyed attending breakfasts with his high school classmates.
Donald proudly served his country during World War II, enlisting in the Navy in December 1943. After completing his initial training at Great Lakes Naval Station, he was stationed at various bases on the East Coast, including Groton, Conn., Virginia Beach, Va., Memphis, Tenn., Jacksonville, Fla., and Key West, Fla. In 1945, he was deployed to the South Pacific, where he served on various aircraft carriers as a radioman and gunner, flying in TBM-1 Avenger fighter planes. One carrier on which he served was the USS Yorktown.
After the war, Donald became a dairy farmer and a mechanic, working at Avco Lycoming for 22 years.
Donald was a member of the American Legion Post 0945 and a member of the Watsontown Masonic Lodge 401 FAM.
A man of many talents, he played bass guitar in the family band "The Playwrights" and restored and upholstered furniture. Over the years, he developed a love for boating and the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, where he and his wife often vacationed with various family members. They enjoyed frequent family picnics at various local parks. While growing up, he enjoyed hunting with his father and relatives and developed a love for baseball and running. A life-long sports enthusiast, he was an avid Phillies fan, a devoted spectator at his grandkids' sporting events, and a co-coach of a grandson's Little League team.
