Carl M. Swartzlander Jr., 79, of 280 Church Road, Northumberland, entered into rest at his home on Wednesday morning, Jan. 13, 2021.
He was born June 14, 1941, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, a son of the late Carl M. and Nora G. (Straub) Swartzlander. He was a 1960 graduate of Danville High School where he resided before moving to Point Township 20 years ago. He also was a graduate of Penn State University and finished tech school in Racine, Wisconsin, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Augusta, Georgia.
Carl retired from Frosty Valley Country Club in 2002 after 40 years at the club. He loved playing golf. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Turf Grass Council, Pocono Turf Grass Association, Keystone Association of Golf Course Superintendents Association where he served as president and as a director. He also was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 42 years and also a member of Toro Turf Professionals Club.
Early on he was employed at the Danville State Hospital, Kennedy Van Saurn and also sold insurance.
He was a life member of the Frosty Valley Country Club and the Sunny Hill's Golf Course. He also belonged to the Penn State Alumni Association, the Alumni of Greater Susquehanna Valley AFSCME and Parse.
He was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Danville, where he was a former council member and served on the building committee for many years. A 27 year member of the Sunbury Elks Lodge 267 and a former Cub Scout and Webelos leader at Mahoning-Cooper School in Danville. He was a former Danville Band Associate where he enjoyed making French fries during the half times and selling at the fair. Carl also served on the Montour County 4-H Development Board as a public at large member for many years.
Carl served on the Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical Advisory Committee for many years until his retirement.
In his early years he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially going to camp. He loved doing landscaping, woodworking and remodeling houses. He especially loved being with his wife and family.
On July 4, 1959, he married his childhood sweetheart, Sarah K. Moodie, in Sunbury and his death ended a marriage of 61 years. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Vickery Tanner and her fiance' Shane Patterson of Northumberland; a son, Michael S. Swartzlander and his husband Anthony Perzia of Milton; a granddaughter, Kayla, wife of Brad Bitler, York; a grandson, Eric Tanner of Melbourne, Fla.; a great-grandson, Bryce Bitler and a great-granddaughter, Rylie Bitler, both of York; a sister, Carol wife of Douglas Feather, Bedford; a sister-in-law, Shirley Ann, wife of Blaine Keckley, Circleville, Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home 133 Bloom Road, Danville, with his pastor, Rev. Trevor Hahn officiating.
Interment will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. The family will receive friends at the Roat-Kriner Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 15, from 5-7 p.m.
The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
