Betty Jane Hummel
Betty Jane Hummel, 93, of 651 Globe Mills Road, Middleburg, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019, at Manor Care of Sunbury, where she had been a resident for the past year.

Betty was born March 16, 1926, near Bannerville, the youngest daughter of the late Charles and Minnie (Shellenberger) Bowersox. She was the last surviving sibling of their 15 children.

Upon graduating from Burnham High School in 1943, Betty moved to the Harrisburg area and began working as a secretary in Middletown and later at the Department of State at the capitol building. She later moved to Selinsgrove where she worked in the law office of Joseph Ingham. While clerking at a public sale, Betty happened to meet a young storekeeper named Carl Hummel. They began a courtship and later married on April 3, 1953. Their union endured for 55 years until Carl's passing on Oct. 1, 2008.

After becoming a wife and mother, Betty assisted Carl in his business and raised their two sons. She also worked in the law office of Irvin Graybill, of Middleburg. She later worked at the Snyder County Courthouse in the office of Register & Recorder, in the office of the Middleburg Auction, and spent a number of years as the secretary of Middlecreek Township.

But Betty's family would always be the center of her life. She was an outstanding cook and housekeeper, and was well known for the family dinners and picnics she hosted.

She was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Kreamer.

In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Mary, Magdalene Havice, Anna, John, Miriam Hannon, Ruth, Albert, Frances, Merrel, Eva Edmiston, Roy, Erma, Irene Walter, and her twin brother Robert. She was also preceded by a granddaughter at birth.

Betty is survived by her sons, Vaughn and his wife Bonnie, of Fredericksburg and Dwight, of Globe Mills; her grandson, Jeremy Hummel and his wife Yvette and great-grandchildren, Julian and Violet Hummel, all of Selinsgrove; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Geisinger Medical Center and especially to the caregivers of ManorCare and Hospice care in Sunbury for their outstanding care of Betty in the last year of her life.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kreamer, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Vickie Brown officiating.

Burial will follow in Globe Mills Cemetery.

Contributions to honor Betty's memory may be made to St. Peter's Church, 623 Kreamer Ave., Kreamer, PA 17833.

We were so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. We would stop to see her (on our visits to see Johns dad) with our two little dachshunds whom she absolutely adored. She always insisted on holding both of them and giving them her attention. She was such a sweet woman and we will miss our visits with her. Rest In Peace Betty. Your kindness will not be forgotten.
