William A. Clemens, 64, of Second Street, New Columbia, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017, at his home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1953, in Lewisburg, a son of the late William N. and Ruth (Engle) Clemens. On July 21, 1973, he married the former April D. Showers who survives.
William was a 1970 graduate of Milton High School, a 1974 graduate of Grove City College, and earned a masters degree in 1979 from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
He was a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel retiring on Jan. 1, 2000, after serving 25 years, 1 month, and 3 days, but who's counting.
Bill was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he always helped with the Easter candy and the New Columbia Civic Association where he helped with the apple butter festival. He was a member of the Union County Historical Society. He loved blacksmithing and was a member of the Artist Blacksmith Association of North American and the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland.
Bill hiked half of the Appalachian Trail in 2000 and had the trail name "Rock Pounder".
He is survived by his wife, April; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Travis Lau, of Hanover; one son and daughter-in-law, William Nicholas and Kristi Clemens, of White River Junction, Vt.; one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Nelson Doebler, of New Columbia; and four grandchildren, Jacob Lau, Samuel Lau, Thomas Lau, and Liam Clemens.
Friends and relatives will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 257 Third St., New Columbia, followed by a memorial service at noon, with the Rev. Christine Mastin officiating.
