Sidney J. Apfelbaum, 95, of Northumberland, passed away in his home on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016.
He was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Scranton, a son of the late Morris and Celia (Luers) Apfelbaum. He married Carole Hertz on Aug. 7, 1949. Together they celebrated 67 years of marriage and raised four sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Sidney graduated from Sunbury High School in 1938 where he was editor of the School Times and art editor of the The Torch Yearbook. He was proud to have been a member of the National Honor Society. In 1942, Sidney graduated at the top of his class from Bucknell University and continued his academic achievement by being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Tau Kappa Alpha Public Speaking Honor Society, and the Delta Phi Alpha German Honor Society.
In 1948, Sidney Apfelbaum graduated law school from the University of Pennsylvania Law School after four and a half years of active combat military service with Battery B, 724th Field Artillery Battalion, 69th Infantry Division during World War II. Sidney was awarded battle stars for the Battle of Central Europe and service in the United States Forces European Theatre at Frankfurt, Germany for his Special Assignment to Project Overcast.
He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar on April 11, 1949, and began his 67 years of law practice. He founded the family law firm, Apfelbaum, Apfelbaum & Apfelbaum, and enjoyed practicing law with his sons, Michael and Jeffrey, his grandchildren, Benjamin and Brianna, and his grandson-in-law, Michael. He was a former Assistant District Attorney in Northumberland County and had also served as solicitor for the City of Sunbury, as well as the Shikellamy and Upper Augusta School Districts.
Sidney was loved and admired for his dedication to his family, law practice, and to the community he actively served. His charitable and service initiatives included serving as Co-Trustee of the 1994 Charles B. Degenstein Foundation, a member of the Susquehanna University Board of Trustees, President of the Sunbury Rotary Club, President of the PA Chamber of Commerce, President of the Youth and Community Center, and Council President of the Susquehanna Valley Council Boy Scouts of America where he was a Silver Beaver Award Honoree.
Sidney enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved dogs. He was an avid artist, loved to travel, fishing at his cabin on Penns Creek, and watching the Yankees.
In addition to his loving wife, Sidney is survived by his three sons, Harry, Jeffrey and his wife Susan, and David and his wife Debra; seven grandchildren, Benjamin and his wife Stephanie, Amy, Marc and his wife Lindsay, Aaron and his wife Pam, Brianna and her husband Mike, Leah, and JonSidney; and four great-grandchildren, Rudy, Mason, Abigail, and Henry.
Sidney was preceded in death by his brother Leonard Apfelbaum; his son, Michael M. Apfelbaum, and Michael's wife Christina.
A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
