Robert E. "Bob" Reigle, 85, of Vicksburg, entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born Oct. 11, 1931, in the Village of Rand, a son of the late Grant and Martha (Belmar) Reigle. In September of 1959, he married the former Phyllis Pick who preceded him death on Dec. 4, 2000.
Bob attended Laurelton Elementary School and graduated from Mifflinburg High School in 1951.
He retired as a captain in the Marine Corps in January 1971. Bob held every enlisted rank from E-1 to Master Sgt E-8, then made 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, and Captain through 20 years of service. Bob served a 12 month tour in Korea in 1952, and two tours in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. He received a Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Purple Heart with three gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal with three stars, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, United Nations Medal, Korean President Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation.
On June 3, 1979, Captain Reigle received a certificate for outstanding community achievement of Vietnam Era Veterans from the President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.
Bob worked at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Lewisburg, from 1971 until 1977. He retired at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, in 1995, after 17 years of service.
He was a member of the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410 firing squad and served in the honor guard for funerals for area veterans. Bob was also a member of the Benfer-Miller American Legion Post 957, New Berlin, Yoder-Zimmerman V.F.W Post 1964, Mifflinburg, West End Fire Co., Glen Iron, life member of the Marine Corps League Susquehanna Valley Detachment, Mifflinburg Moose Lodge 1396, life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association, Marine Corps Mustang Association, and four share holder of the Union County Sportsmen's Club, Weikert.
He is survived by one son, Jon Reigle, of Mifflinburg; two daughters, Dianne Garcia, of Sunbury, and Bonnie Wirth, of Lewisburg; six grandchildren, David Wirth, of Mifflinburg, Karl Wirth, of Sunbury, Jon Reigle II, of Milton, Fla., Brook Reigle, of New Columbia, Gabrielle Bond, of Phoenixville, and Heath Sholly, of Middleburg; one brother, Roger Reigle, of Mifflinburg; one sister, Violet Wallace, of Mifflinburg; and his longtime companion, Jo Miller, of Penns Creek.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Wilda; and one brother, William.
