Rev. James Lewis Johnson, 71, passed away on Aug. 5, 2016, in Portland, Maine due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was born Dec. 13, 1944, in Lewisburg, Pa., to Elias Ray and Arlene (Smith) Johnson.
Jim grew up in Lewisburg where he graduated high school. After graduating from Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania with a degree in education he started his teaching career in Millville, Pa. Jim felt a calling to serve God and attended Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine. Over a period of more than 30 years he served as a pastor for Searsport, North Searsport, and Waldoboro United Methodists Churches, in Maine, and the Tappan Reformed Church in Tappan, N.Y.
Jim married his college sweetheart, Shirley (Lewis) Johnson, of Northumberland, Pa., and together they raised two children while enjoying their life together for more than 52 years serving God and their surrounding communities. After retiring, they split time between their homes in Orlando, Fla., and Islesboro, Maine.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Vonnie (Johnson) Hickox Johnson, Lewisburg, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Lewis) Johnson, his sons, James Johnson Jr., and Mark Johnson; his brother, David Johnson; and his sister, Elizabeth (Johnson) Beattie. He will also be greatly missed by James' wife Karen (Gold) Johnson and three grandchildren, Jarrid, Eric, and Jessica Johnson; and several brother-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, N.Y.
