Phyllis's Story

Text size

Phyllis Mae Hockenbroch Clark has joined her husband in the loving arms of their Lord and Savior. After a family prayer surrounding her bedside, she passed peacefully at Shamokin Geisinger Medical Center in Coal Township on September 9, 2017.
She was born June 4, 1929, on her family's dairy farm in Irish Valley, a daughter of Pearl (Richie) and Melvin Hockenbroch.
She graduated in 1947 from Shamokin Area High School.
After working for two years, she married Carl Eugene Clark on a very snowy New Years Day in 1949. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage where they also worked side by side for Clark's Mr. Red Meats.
Phyllis was a talented seamstress, creating wedding gowns, prom dresses, and entire wardrobes for members of her family. This was very helpful as she raised four daughters and one son. She set a wonderful example for her family as she consistently saw the best in people, forgave the worst, and never lost her faith in God. She humbly practiced unconditional love without complaint.
She was a member of Clark's Grove United Methodist Church where she supported the Women's ministries and many chicken barbecues.
She was an avid Phillies fan who rarely missed a game and knew the players names and stats.
As the matriarch of a large and loving family, she will be greatly missed. She is survived by four daughters, Deborah married to Lawrence Cooper, Cynthia married to Gregory Gillespie, Sherri Shebelsky, Susan married to Dr. Ray Roth, and one son, Carl E. Clark II, married to Suzanne (Semerod) Clark; four sisters, Joyce Rumberger, Lucille Bidelspach, Carol Crowl, and Judith Strausser; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren for whom she never missed celebrating a birthday.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Roland and Kenneth Hockenbroch; one sister, Charlotte Clark; one son-in-law, David R. Shebelsky; and two grandchildren, Jenna A. Roth and Tyler A. Clark.
A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Clark's Grove United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be given to Clark's Grove United Methodist Church in Irish Valley.
