Mick McAllister, 92, of Cary, N.C., died at Wake-Med Hospital on Saturday, April 29, 2017.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John B. McAllister, of Northumberland. Mick was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jean VanKirk McAllister, Locust Grove, Va.
He was a 1942 graduate of Northumberland High School and a 1949 graduate of Susquehanna University.
Mick served in the Navy during World War II and is a 32nd degree Mason. A former professional musician, Mick played with various big bands of the 1940s era.
After 38 years, he retired from the Boy Scouts of America as Director of International Division in 1987. Mick became active in Scouting during his youth in Northumberland. He served in various volunteer capacities as an adult before joining the organization's professional staff in 1949. In 1985 Mick received the Baden Powell Fellow award from King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf.
Mick enjoyed his retirement years at Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, Va., where he regularly hiked and played tennis. In December, 2016 he moved to Heartfields, Cary, where his zeal for walking continued on Cary's greenways and trails.
Mick is survived by two daughters, Nancy M. Kleindienst (William), of White Plains, Md., and Katie Neuhauser (John), of Cary, N.C.; one grandson Tom Neuhauser of Holly Springs, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Beth Neuhauser-Poulin (Matt), of Gaithersburg, Md.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 300 Queen St., Northumberland, with Patricia Pittsnogle officiating, Interment will follow with military honors accorded by the American Legion Post 44, Northumberland in Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, support the Boy Scouts of America or a local ASPCA.
Arrangements are by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland.
