Michael A. Mengel, 77, of Mount Pleasant Mills, went home to be with his Lord, his son "Tippy", his granddaughter Andria, and so many family members, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, surrounded by loved ones at his home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1939, to Henry A. and Beatrice (Treas) Mengel of Mount Pleasant Mills. He was the younger of their two children.
In 1957, Mike graduated from Middleburg High School, where he played soccer. During his high school years, Mike met Sandy Reitz at Rolling Green Park, and began his loving lifetime journey. In June 1957, he married Sandra H. Reitz, who survives. They went to housekeeping in a Sunbury apartment, before moving to their home in Mount Pleasant Mills. They enjoyed 59 long years of their loving marriage.
Like his grandfather and father, in profession, Mike was a butcher. They owned and operated Mengel Meats in Mount Pleasant Mills. They were well known for their country hams and ring bologna. Later he drove for Bilger's Fuels, and others, where he delivered home fuel oil, and enjoyed his many customers and co-workers. After retirement, Mike worked part time for Sunbury Motors as a driver.
Mike was an accomplished carpenter and added a room to their home, and also helped build his daughter Charlotte's log home. Many friends are the recipients of Mike's wooden projects. Mike loved his cabin in Canada with family and both U.S. and Canadian friends. His favorite place to be was on the St. Lawrence in his boat. In his younger years, Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father-in-law, Wilson Reitz and in later years with family, especially his son Mike, and son-in-law Grover, and grandson Travis. Mike went on many great vacations in Canada, Ocean City, N.J., and Duck, N.C. with his sister-in-law Renee and Don and lots of cherished memories were made with Casey, Keri and Travis traveling in the Chevy van with the VCR playing and "Pap" in the Captain's seat.
Mike was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, since his early childhood. Currently he was a member of the Board of Trustees and the Church Administrative Council.
He was also president of the Fairview Cemetery Association. Mike was a member of the One Room School House Committee, where he helped organize and enjoyed reunions with old classmates and friends. He was a member of the Fremont Fire Company and the National Rifle Association. He was the former secretary of the Perry Township Municipal Authority.
In addition to his wife Sandy, Mike is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte I. and Grover Portzline; former daughter-in-law, Donna Mengel and her partner Joel Bottiger; grandchildren, Casey Mengel Sheaffer and her husband Justin, Keri Portzline and her partner Derrick Spriggle, Travis Portzline and partner Abby Gesselman; great-grandchildren, Jack Sheaffer, Raegan Spriggle, Penny Sheaffer, and Colt "Michael" Portzline; his half sister, Betty Carnevale; brother-in-law; Wilson Reitz Jr. and his wife Kathleen; sister-in-law; Irene Metzger and her husband Donald H.; and many beloved nephews, nieces and their children, and a special family friend Mitzi Feister.
Mike was preceded in death by his son, Michael "Tippy" Mengel Jr.; a granddaughter, Andria Mengel Sprenkle; a sister, Charlotte Mengel; and his father and mother-in-law, Wilson and Gladys Reitz.
There will be a celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 9465 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills. Following the service a luncheon and visitation will be held at the church. Officiating will be Pastor Debra Dailey.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made in loving memory of Mike to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 15, Mount Pleasant Mills, PA 17853. A loving thanks to Mike's dialysis team, Sun Home Health Hospice, to Dr. David Zelechoski and to all who have shared in the joys and sorrows, with Mike and our family, over the many years, Our heartfelt thanks and love, may God bless you always, The Mike Mengel Family.
