Michael L. Johnston Sr., 74, of Elysburg, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born May 28, 1942, in Sunbury, a son of the late Clifford and Grace Ruth (Smith) Johnston. He moved to Elysburg from Sunbury in 1971.

Mr. Johnston received his education at Sunbury Area High school, graduating in 1960. He moved on to receive his undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University and Hiram-Scott College in Nebraska. He later earned a master's degree in psychology from Bucknell University. He also served in the Air Force under the Strategic Air Command and was stationed in Puerto Rico and Maine.

Mike held several jobs including working at the Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging in Shamokin, Selinsgrove Center, and White Haven Center where he was a unit manager. His final job prior to retirement was as a budget analyst for the Coal Township prison. He also worked part-time for Farnsworth Camping center after retirement.

Mr. Johnston was a well-educated man whose knowledge and sense of humor will be missed. Prior to ill health he was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Elysburg. He was also a member of the Packhorse Sportsman's Association of Potter County, the Valley Gun and Country Club, and The Elysburg Fish and Game Club. Previously he was a member of the East End Hose Company in Sunbury and the Elysburg Volunteer Fire Company.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, large campfires, and in recent years playing cards with his friends. Mr. Johnston and his family enjoyed and appreciated the company of neighbors and friends in the Elysburg community.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary C. (Bowers) Johnston in December of 2009. They had been married for 41 years.

He is survived by his son, Michael L. Johnston Jr., of Catawissa, and his wife Brenda (Kile) Johnston and his two granddaughters, Blair, 19, and Quinn, 11. He also has one sister, Anne (Johnston) Plante, of Souderton; and a niece, Michelle Martin and Steve Plante.

Later in his life, Mike enjoyed attending what events he could of his granddaughters, and they were a tremendous source of pride for him.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Rothermel-Heizenroth Funeral & Cremation Service, Elysburg, followed by the funeral service at 11 with the Rev. MarthaSue Moll officiating.

Interment will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
