Merlin V. Schreffler, 90, of Klingerstown, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Klingerstown, a son of the late Mabel (Kauffman) and Victor Schreffler. He was married to the former Dorothy Koppenhaver who passed away on Jan. 12, 1994.
Merlin graduated from the Pine Park High School and drove truck in the 1940s. He began farming in 1950 and retired from farming at age 51. Upon retiring he began working for Klinger's, driving school bus, which he did for more than 30 years. He served as a township supervisor for many years beginning in the early 70s. Merlin also sold Farm Family Life Insurance in the 60s and was an EMT with the Mahantongo Ambulance Service in the late 70s and early 80s.
He was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church. He began serving on the church council at age 16, was a Sunday school superintendent, a member of the choir, a youth leader, and served on church council and various committees. He was also a member of the Farmers Association and was a former officer with the Farm Bureau.
Merlin enjoyed traveling and visited many places throughout the world. He was an avid hunter and liked putting puzzles together and playing Scrabble.
Merlin is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Renn, of Klingerstown, and Beverly Eiche Kriner and her husband Philip, of Orwigsburg; a foster son, Robert Rupp, of New Mexico; six grandchildren, Catherine Eiche, Jeremy Renn, Madeleine Eiche, Corey Renn, Mallory Wiest, and Benjamin Eiche; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Heim and Bernice Masser; and two sons-in-law, Rev. Elmer Eiche and Freddie Renn.
A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Lutheran Church, Pitman, followed by the funeral at 11, with the Rev. Warren Egebo officiating.
Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Valley View.
