Mary Jane Stackowski, M.D., 83, formerly of Spottswood Drive, Milton, passed away on Dec. 30, 2016, at the Emmanuel Nursing Center in Danville.
She was born July 23, 1933, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Ruth Ann (Giltner) Stackowski.
Dr. Stackowski graduated from Cheltenham High School, Temple University and the Temple University Medical School in 1961. She completed an internship at the Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital and a residency in radiology at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
She worked in general practice in Milton for three years prior to her residency and returned after it was completed to work as a radiologist at the Evangelical Community Hospital in 1969. She was instrumental in developing the radiology department at the hospital where she added nuclear medicine, ultrasound, and cat scanning modalities as well as other special procedures. She was a staff physician at Evangelical Community Hospital for 23 years and was the radiologist for 17 of those years. She was a consultant radiologist at the Sunbury Hospital, the Lock Haven Hospital, USP Lewisburg, and USP Allenwood. She was also the Chief of Health Programs at the Allenwood Camp for eight years prior to her retirement in 1997. Dr. Stackowski had four published papers involving radiation and radiologic topics.
She was a life member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical society. She was an active member of St. Joseph Church in Milton where she served as Eucharistic minister to shut in parishioners. She was a board member of the Milton Public Library and volunteered at the local bloodmobiles.
She is survived by two nephews in California.
Dr. Stackowski was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Ferguson, and her companion Jennifer Quinn-White.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in Milton Cemetery, Golf Course Road, Milton, with the Rev. John D. Hoke officiating.
Arrangements are by the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton.
