Mary Gabala, 79, of Selinsgrove, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret DiCicco.
When Mary was 18, she followed her calling to serve God and became a cloistered Carmelite nun. She remained a nun for 15 years. She would later say her calling by God to leave the Order was as strong as her initial one to serve it. She would later marry John, who unbeknownst to her frequently came to the convent where she resided to deliver a variety of donations he would gather. John once even had dinner with Mary's parents who happened to be visiting her one weekend. This was discovered only after John and Mary formally met and he found out who her parents were. Over the years, John and Mary matained a strong connection with the Carmelites and Mary counted those nuns among her closest of friends.
She is survived by two sons, John and Joseph; one daughter, Mary; two daughters-in-law, Stephanie and Cindy; and two granddaughters, Josie and little Lily. While not formally related, Mary greatly valued Tim's and Glen's help over the years and considered them to be part of the family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her parents, Joseph and Margaret.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Drive, Selinsgrove, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11, with Father Tukura Pius Michael O.P., as celebrant.
A private burial will be held in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask donations be made to the Living Beyond Breast Cancer Foundation, 40 Monument Road, Suite104, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
