Marlin's Story

Marlin E. "Sonny" Shaffer, 74, of Mount Pleasant Mills, entered into rest on Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was the husband of Shirley M. (Zimmerman) Shaffer to whom he was married almost 56 years.

Marlin was born on Oct. 6, 1942, in Snyder County. He was the son of Edna (Inch) Shaffer of Mount Pleasant Mills and the late Marlin W. Shaffer.

He was a 1960 graduate of Selinsgrove High School and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He retired from the Selinsgrove School District and formerly worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Marlin was a member of St. Paul's Family Worship, Liverpool, Oriental Valley Sportsman Association, the American Legion Post No. 0945, Harrisburg, and was a life member of the Richfield Sportsman Association. He was a former Scoutmaster for Troop 401, Port Trevorton.

Marlin enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a real people person and loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and mother, Marlin is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christine E. and Pastor Curtis A. Kantz, of Port Trevorton; a son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Song S. Shaffer, of Mount Pleasant Mills; a son-in-law, James Rice, of Mount Pleasant Mills; five grandchildren, Julie Kantz, Clinton Kantz and his wife Brandi, Joseph Kantz, Marlin Kantz, Marlena Shaffer and her companion Zeb Brunson; five great-grandchildren, Hailey Kantz, twins Fox and Phoenix Kantz, Abbott Kantz, and Iroh Brunson; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Alfred Martin, of Mount Pleasant Mills; a nephew, Greg Martin and his wife Kathy, of Mount Pleasant Mills; and two great nieces and a great nephew.

Marlin was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Rice; a granddaughter, Mindy Jo Rice; a grandson, Marlin Joseph Shaffer; and a nephew, Bruce Martin.

Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2017, and again on Tuesday, April 4, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills. Officiating will be his son-in-law Pastor Curtis A. Kantz.

Burial will be in Aline Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills with military honors accorded by the Selinsgrove American Legion Victory Post No. 25 and the Selinsgrove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in loving memory of Marlin to St. Paul's Family Worship, c/o Pastor Curtis Kantz, Attention: Marie Hoffman, treasurer, 681 Meiserville Road, Port Trevorton, PA 17864.

The family wishes to express special gratitude to Dr. Charlie Pagana, Dr. James Pagana, and granddaughter Julie Kantz for the support and care they gave to Marlin.
