Luther E. Benfer, 89, of Grayson View Court, Selinsgrove, formerly of Kratzerville, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Jackson Township, Snyder County, a son of the late Luther and Hattie (Brouse) Benfer. On March 28, 1945, he was married to Frances Ruth Spigelmyer and her death broke a marital union of 51 years.
As a young man he helped on the family farm. He worked short term at the Middleburg Tannery, the chair factory, and farmed again. He and his brother Raymond started a milk truck service and mostly hauled milk to Rosedale's in New Berlin and had also hauled tomatoes to Boiardi's.
He moved the family to New Berlin where he worked at Rosedale until its closing in 1962. They then moved to Kratzerville in 1956. He drove delivery truck for Groce Mills and was a handyman at Steininger's Laundry in Selinsgrove. Lastly, he went to work in the boiler room of the Selinsgrove State School. At that time they burned coal to produce steam energy for the school. He retired from there in 1990 after 25 years to take care of Frances who had breast cancer.
Frances started working on the Benfer genealogy in the 1970s. She was a true genealogist. Luther and her worked together on her genealogy projects. They spent numerous hours in cemeteries writing down names and dates from tombstones, contributing to many cemetery books published by Charles Morgan.
When the children were young, the Sunday ritual was to go for a "Sunday drive." You could never go back the way you came. Most often, they stopped for hot roast beef sandwiches and French fries. Weekends were spent visiting relatives and ending up at the family gathering at Grandpa and Grandma Spigelmyer's where most of the Spigelmyer clan gathered to watch Walt Disney on Sunday nights.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Lee Hartman and her companion James Moyer and Barbara Ann Bordner and husband, Richard; son-in-law, Wayne Boyer; four grandchildren Lisa Keller and husband Chuck, Ryan Hartman, and Jason and Brenda Boyer; six great-grandchildren, Gannon and Gavin Keller, Nathan Hartman, Alissa and Kaylee Bohner, and Sophie Boyer; and two brothers-in-law, Leroy and Alvin Walter.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Louise Boyer; one son-in-law, Roger Hartman; two granddaughters, baby girl Hartman and Cheryl Louise Boyer; two sisters, Pauline and Winifred Walter; one brother, Raymond Benfer; and one sister-in-law, Geraldine Benfer.
