Lee C. Hummel
Mar 27, 1925 - May 26, 2016
Lee C. Hummel's 91 years on this earth ended in the spot he loved most: at his home, in Selinsgrove, with his wife by his side on May 26, 2016.
He was born March 27, 1925, in Monroe Township, Snyder County, a son of the late Roy A. and Miriam O. (Ferdig) Hummel. He and his wife, the former Arlene Bidelspach Whipple, celebrated their wedding anniversary on May 21, 2016, the exact date of their wedding 50 years earlier, with a party of over 100 guests.
Lee attended a one-room elementary school in Snyder County. He was drafted in April of his senior year but was deferred long enough to graduate from Northumberland High School in 1943. He was inducted into the army in June of that year.
Most of his service time was in the 346th Infantry Regiment of the 87th Infantry Division. He saw combat duty with his unit in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany when it was a part of the Third Army commanded by General George S. Patton. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, four service ribbons and three battle stars for his European Theater Ribbon.
Upon returning to civilian life, he accepted a bookkeeping position with Weis Pure Food Stores, now Weis Markets. He retired in 1988 after 42 years of service, the last 25 as a purchasing agent.
Lee was a lifelong member of Shreiner's Church, now Christ Community United Methodist Church, where he held various offices and was a member of the choir for many years. He was a member of the Sunbury Rotary Club for thirty years and was a past president as well as club secretary for five years. He was made an honorary member when he resigned in 2012 for health reasons. As a director and secretary of Shreiner's Church Cemetery Association, he managed burial arrangements and lot sales for 19 years.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David L. Hummel and Mary C. Ballantine, of Mechanicsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen L. Hummel and E. Richard Bonham, of Lewisburg; one granddaughter, Abigail E. McQuiston and husband Robert S. McQuiston of Wilmington, Del., and her two children, Emma and Gavin Kelso; one nephew, Brian Bidelspach and family, of Sunbury; and two nieces, Andrea Shurtliff and her family, of Buffalo, N.Y., and Michele Bidelspach and Brian Skrenta, of New York City, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by the former Irene Corbin, with whom he had a union of 17 years; and one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Janet Whipple and David D. Dagle III.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 13, and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, followed by a memorial service in Christ Community United Methodist Church, Selinsgrove.
Interment with full military honors in Shreiner's Church Cemetery will immediately follow the memorial service. A lunch will be provided at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lee's memory may be made to Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3959 Park Rd., Selinsgrove, PA 17870; or to the Sunbury Rotary Club, P.O. Box 202, Sunbury, PA 17801.
