John R. Smith, 89, of Grand Street, Middleburg, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 17, 2017, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born July 20, 1928, in Middleburg, a son of the late Herbert and Ellen (Bressler) Smith. On April 28, 1951, he married the former Helen J. Try who survives.
John had been employed at National Limestone Quarry, Middleburg, Yawmen and Erbe, Rochester, N.Y., and retired after 28 years from Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg.
He was a lifetime member of the Middleburg Moose, and a member of various fire companies and the New Berlin American Legion. He was a former member of the Heiser-Hoffman V.F.W., Middleburg.
John enjoyed walking at the mall, dining out at area restaurants, and spending time with his family. He was an avid channel surfer looking for Westerns. He'll be remembered for sitting on his front porch swing.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty and Harvey Martin, and Lori Brouse; eight grandchildren including his grandson Jeremy Brouse who he relied upon for help around the house; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Herman; granddaughter-in-law, Angela Herman; great-granddaughter, Raylee Herman; brothers, Walter Hartman and wife, Goldie, and William P. Smith; sisters, Mary Keister and husband Russell, and Helen Haines and husband John; and his two cats, Midnight and Snowball.
At John's request, there will be no viewing. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Arbogast Church Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills, with Pastor Randy Geedy officiating.
The family will provide flowers. Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
