John K. McKinney Jr., 62, of Selinsgrove, entered into rest on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at the home of his sister, Carol Keister, of Selinsgrove after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born April 23, 1954, at Sunbury Community Hospital, a son of the late John K. McKinney Sr., a prominent building contractor in the Sunbury area and Catherine (Gover) McKinney, of Sunbury.
John was a 1972 graduate of Shikellamy High School. He was a veteran serving in the Army from 1974 to 1976 as a heavy equipment operator and was stationed in Germany.
He was employed for many years at Wood-Mode as a sander until illness forced his retirement. Before that he worked at Weis Food Service filling orders. Being a lover of animals, he volunteered at Far Point Animal Rescue in Port Treverton where he derived great pleasure in providing care to the animals. They in turn appreciated his devotion to them. He also derived great joy from his niece and nephew, Courtney and Jared Slear.
John was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He would often go to New York and hunt on the land owned by his sister and brother-in-law.
In addition, he was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and Penn State football.
In addition to his mother, he is also survived by sisters, Carol Keister, of Selinsgrove and Crystal Slear (husband Jeff), of Allegany, N.Y.; and one brother, Robert, of Sunbury. In addition he is also survived by his cousins, Dan and Larry McKinney; and an aunt, Madge.
John was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dennis Keister.
Per John's wishes, there will be no viewing or service.
Charitable donations, if desired, can be made to Far Point Animal Rescue of Port Trevorton, 1507 Verdilla Road, Port Treverton, PA 17864 or the American Cancer Society.
