Hilda's Story

Hilda Mary Shively, 102, of Mifflinburg, entered into rest at 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 06, 2017, at Rolling Hills Manor where she had been a guest since Tuesday.

She was born on July 15, 1915, in Centre County, the daughter of the late Lida B. Orndorf. On Nov. 16, 1941, Hilda married John W. Shively, who passed away on Dec. 23, 1998.

Hilda was a 1934 graduate of East Penn Valley High School, Millheim and a 1947 graduate of the Lankenau Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia in the Cadet Corp.

In 1947, she began employment at Laurelton Center as a psychiatric nurse and supervisor of the hospital and two units. She retired after 30 years of service in 1976. Previously she was employed at the Montrose Independent Newspaper and Bucknell University infirmary.

She was a member of Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, Lankenau Hospital Alumni Association, AARP, Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE) and was a Red Cross volunteer with blood drives and blood pressure screenings. She would also volunteer at Mifflinburg Bank for monthly blood pressure screenings.

Hilda enjoyed traveling, reading, collecting antiques, making tatted snowflakes as well as other needlework.

She is survived by a daughter, Annette Shively, of Mifflinburg; and numerous extended family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Union Cemetery, Route 45, Woodward, with the Rev. Mrs. Shirley Cornell, officiating. Following the service a fellowship luncheon will be held at the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Hilda's memory may be sent to Herr Memorial Library, 500 Market St., Mifflinburg, or the American Heart Association, 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701.
