Gilbert G. Swank, 92, of Lewisburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Irish Valley, a son of the late Kimber Swank and Zora (Lewis) Swank. On Oct. 23, 1954, he married the former Blendyne Cook of Elysburg, who survives.
Gilbert attended elementary school at the Swank Elementary School in Irish Valley and graduated from Ralpho Township High School in 1942. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army as a paratrooper from 1943 to 1946. During that time he saw battle in New Guinea and the Philippines. For his service, Gilbert earned five Bronze Stars and various other awards and citations.
Following his time in the military, Gilbert worked as a butcher at Valley Forge Army Hospital until its closing in 1973. He then worked in food service at Pennhurst State Hospital until retiring in 1986. During this time, Gilbert and Blendyne lived in Park Ford. Following retirement, they returned to Elysburg. During his retirement years, Gilbert worked in the funnel cake stand at Knoebels until 2012. In September of 2015, Gilbert and Blendyne moved to RiverWoods in Lewisburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kathy Swank, of Lewisburg; grandson and his wife, Adam and Hilary Swank, of Thornton, N.H., and grandson, Patrick Swank, of San Diego, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Pearl Swank, and one sister, Jean Swank, all of Elysburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Gilbert, of Loyalsock, Ellen Graden, of Danville and Shirley Swank, of Elysburg.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pine Hill Cemetery, Elysburg. A funeral luncheon for family and friends will follow at noon at Masser's Restaurant, Paxinos.
