George J. Buchanan, 87, of Sunbury, passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.
He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Scranton, a son of the late George J. and Irene (Hoover) Buchanan. On Feb. 9, 1947, he married the love of his life, the former Rose Marie Decker who passed on March 28, 2016.
George was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and served in the Marine Corps.
He worked his entire career with the PA Department of State retiring as a State Auditor for the Agriculture Department.
George attained the position of Full Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of American Legion Post 201.
He enjoyed friends and family often attending the local fairs with them. He loved his pet dog "Mabel."
George is survived by seven daughters and three sons-in-law, Catherine A. Buchanan, of Sunbury, June Marie Young, of Northumberland, Nancy and Joe Baker, of Sunbury, Mary and Rick Williard, of Sunbury, Therese J. Garvey, of Danville, Patricia S. Buchanan, of Sunbury, and Elizabeth A. and Jeffrey Lewis, of Sunbury; one son, James Kelly Buchanan and his companion Sharon Wilson, of Sunbury, 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, George J. Buchanan III in 1996; one grandchild, Jayme Buchanon; and two siblings, Clair Smith and Renee Demuro.
There is no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Saint Monica Church, Sunbury, with the Rev. Fred Wangwe, A.J., as celebrant.
Interment will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington with a military honor guard.
