Esther I. Walter, 96, of Northumberland, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.
She was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Snydertown, a daughter of the late Frank and Lestie (Swank) Heddings. She was married to Harry M. Walter who preceded her in death in 1981.
During World War II she was employed by the Air Force at Middletown. She was last employed for 37 years by the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company.
She was a member of the former St. John's Lutheran Church, Snydertown and served as the church treasurer for many years. She served as secretary of the Interfaith Council of Churches. She was a member of the Friends of Joseph Priestley, Northumberland, the Susquehanna Valley Weaver's Guild, and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Priestley House.
Esther was an avid bowler for more than 55 years and also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and listening to all kinds of music. She traveled extensively during her lifetime visiting all 50 states, Europe, Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand.
She is survived by three nephews, William Lauver, Daniel Cook, and Frank Heddings; and six nieces, Dorothy Howard, Lois Morrigan, Janet Lindenmuth, Dona Munsell, Patricia Martin and Judith Odel.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Ernest, Raymond, Harold and Donald; three sisters, Hazel, Ruth and Florence; and one niece, Madeline Erickson.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 309 Water St., Northumberland, followed by the funeral at 2.
Interment will be in the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
