Eleanor Miriam Greco, 96, of Mount Carmel, mother, grandmother, and friend to all, died peacefully the morning of Tuesday, July 12, 2016, in her home.
Eleanor was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Snyder County, a daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth (Blazer) Herman. As a child, she lived on the Isle of Que and spent her time in the river swimming, fishing, and ice-skating at Little Norway. She graduated from Selinsgrove High School at the age of 16 and proceeded on to graduate from Harrisburg Business School.
She was introduced to her late husband, Dr. Joseph Greco at an ice-cream parlor in Selinsgrove. After their introduction, she gave him a walking tour of the Isle of Que in high heels, while he was on crutches. He picked her up in his family's coal truck on their first date to Rolling Green Park. They were married at St. Michael's Church in Sunbury in 1943.
Eleanor worked at Susquehanna University in the office of the registrar and with her never-take-no-for-an-answer attitude worked her way up to be the secretary to President G. Morris Smith. She remained at Susquehanna until moving to Philadelphia with her husband as he attended Hahnemann Medical College while in the Army Medical Program. When in Philadelphia, she worked on Spring Garden Avenue as a secretary at Merck Sharp and Dome. In the 1950s, after living in several states, they settled in Mount Carmel to raise a family.
Eleanor spent her summers gathering with family and friends at the farm in Snydertown where they swam at the pool, had meals on the porch and parties in the barn. In addition to family reunions at the farm, she ran a federally funded camp for children of Northumberland County in the 1970's.
She was an active member of many organizations including: The Mt. Carmel Women's Club, The Medical Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Mt. Carmel Library Board, Anthracite Community Theater, Red Hat Society, and Divine Redeemer Church. She was an avid reader and completed daily crossword puzzles. She enjoyed bowling and playing bridge, thirty-one, and pinochle with friends. She had a passion for shopping at Boscov's, QVC, and local malls; she was always looking for fancy heels, bright lipstick, and flashy jewelry. Her favorite things included: anything purple or yellow, butterflies, and flowers, especially violets and gardenias. Music, art, and dancing were dear to her heart. Her favorite discussion topic was politics and she almost always had the last word. Most importantly, she never had an enemy and loved everyone.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Joseph Greco Jr. and wife, Holly, of Sarasota, Fla.., Dr. Jeffery M. Greco and Angela Picarella, of Mount Carmel, Linda Dalpiaz and husband, Charles, of Sunbury, and daughter-in-law, Diane Greco, of Sarasota; her sister, Mary Bogar, of Camp Hill. Eleanor was the matriarch of a large family, which includes 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, a brother-in law, sisters-in-law, and extended family.
Her husband Dr. Joseph Greco, son, Dr. Jonathan Greco, and brother, Bud Herman preceded her in death.
