Doris C. Harter, 92, of Sunbury, was blessed to trade in her old rugged cross for a crown on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017.
She passed peacefully at The Summit Elderlodge, Moravia, N.Y., with her daughter by her side.
She was born Aug. 27, 1925, the daughter of Franklin and Ada Dent, of Bloomsburg.
After high school, Doris worked as an operator for Bell Telephone, and later at the S&H Green Stamp store until the surprising arrival of her youngest son. She enjoyed 20 years as a fitness instructor at the local YMCA.
Doris was a lifelong member of Christ United Methodist Church where she sang with the choir for more than 40 years. She lived her faith in several areas of service, from her decades volunteering for Meals on Wheels to her 60 years as a dedicated blood donor, giving 20 gallons!
Doris was a nurturing mother and grandmother. She shared her love of cooking, sewing, boating and gardening with her family, and they will be strengthened by the warm memories and skills she entrusted to them. Always supportive of her children, in recent years Doris enjoyed the title of "Band Mom" while traveling to listen to her eldest son play bass guitar in a classic rock band.
The death of her husband Kenneth in 1998 ended a 52-year union. She was predeceased by her brothers, Franklin and Jay.
Doris is survived by her brother, Frederick; and her children, Diane (Gordon) Muirhead, Barry (Kate) Harter, Craig (Heather) Harter; grandchildren, Kevin, Karen, Brad, Brett, Kendra and Carly; and great-grandchildren, Molly, Nathan, Joshua, Angolina, Aleah and Aubrey.
Giving until the end, Doris wished to be a participant in the Anatomical Donation Program for medical study in the hope that others can benefit from learning more about Alzheimer's disease. Her family will have a memorial service to honor her memory at a later date.
