Dale Robert Derr Sr., 82, of Rolling Green Drive, Selinsgrove, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Jan. 6, 1934, in Sunbury, a son of the late Edgar I. and Dora (Anderson) Derr. On June 2, 1957, he married the former Helle M. Mottus who survives.
Dale attended Shamokin Dam schools and was a 1951 graduate of Selinsgrove High School. He then attended the Naval Aviation School and proudly served during the Korean War on the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier in Guantanamo Bay.
He retired from Weis Markets after 47 years of service as the Driver Trainer & Safety Supervisor.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Shamokin Dam, a member and past master of the Lafayette Lodge #194 Free & Accepted Masons, the American Legion Post 25, Selinsgrove, Korean Last Man's Club, the Kreamer Sporstmans Club, and was a life member of the Hummel's Wharf, Shamokin Dam and Kratzerville Fire Companies.
Dale was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed, boating, hunting and fishing, especially in Canada. He was very handy being able to fix anything and was a talented woodworker and furniture maker. Music and dancing was a great love of Dale's who always sang Happy Brithday to all of his family members on their birthdays. He was fond of antique cars and enjoyed traveling especially anywhere near water. Dale was fond of peanut butter and no one could make a grilled cheese sandwich like him. He will be remembered for his unique wit. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dale Jr. and Helene Derr, of Northumberland; two daughters and one son-in-law, Melanie Derr, of Northumberland and Lisa and Steve Rhoads, of Selinsgrove; five grandchildren, Corey Derr and wife Caitlin, Colby Derr, Danielle and Brooke Greak and Nicholas Rhoads; and one great-granddaughter, Sylvie Elizabeth Derr.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Fred Roush; and four sisters, Thelma Wertz, June Simonton, Irene Hommel, and Shirley Derr.
A celebration and time of fellowship will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3939 Park Road, Selinsgrove.
A private graveside service will be held in Shreiner's Cemetery, Selinsgrove with the Rev. Keith Pittsnogle officiating.
