Betty Cunfer, 93, formerly of Butler Drive, Drums, passed away on Thursday evening, May 18, 2017, at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community where she had been a guest for the past 2 1/2 years.
Born in Hazleton on July 8, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Alverna (Mace) Snyder, and spent most of her life in Drums.
A 1940 graduate of Hazleton High School, Betty served as treasurer of her class reunion committee for 30 years. She continued her education at Women's Medical College Hospital in Philadelphia, earning her RN in 1944. She then worked professionally in Philadelphia for two years, later did private duty nursing at Hazleton's St. Joseph Hospital, and was last employed at Berwick Retirement Village.
Betty was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Saint Johns. She was a member and officer of the Butler Township Senior Citizens and was also an RSVP member of the nursing-coordinated craft club at the senior center, a group that knitted and crocheted items that were distributed at local nursing homes and hospitals. Additionally, she did volunteer work at Saint Luke Manor in Hazleton for 17 years, and volunteered at Red Cross Bloodmobiles, herself being a nine-gallon donor over her lifetime.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Jacoby; her husband of 66 years, Elmer Cunfer; son-in-law, Patrick Palmer; brother, Dr. Lee Snyder; and grandson, Matthew Cunfer.
Surviving are her sons, James Cunfer and his wife Lisa, of Danville, and Gerald Cunfer and his wife Diane, of Manheim; daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Joanne) Palmer, of Royersford; grandchildren, Rebecca, Terri, Patricia, Allison, Jared, Keith, and Kelly; as well as her only great-grandson, Landon.
Betty's family will receive friends during a closed casket visitation period at the Butler Chapel of Krapf & Hughes Funeral Home Inc, 530 W. Butler Drive in Drums, on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Saint Johns, with Pastor Michele Kaufman presiding.
Burial will follow in the St. Johns Lutheran and UCC Cemetery.
There will be no visitation time at the church on Monday morning nor will there be any gathering at the funeral home prior to the service.
