Vernon L. Newman Jr., 63, of Sunbury, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at the Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the Mansion.
Vern was born Nov. 26, 1953, in Sunbury, a son of the late Vernon L. Newman, who preceded him in 1971, and Mabel E. (Neidig) Newman, 88, who resides in Watervliet, N.Y.
Vern was a 1971 graduate of Shikellamy High School and was an Air Force veteran.
He worked as a mechanic for 38 years at the Butterkrust/Sara Lee Bakery in Sunbury and took an early retirement in November 2015,
Vern was a soft spoken, hardworking mechanic, who had a passion for music, motorcycles and hunting. His music was enjoyed by many as he traveled around and performed at open mic venues throughout the area. He was uniquely independent, but was always willing to share a smile or laughter with everyone he met.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his sister, Brenda E. (Newman) Ladd and brother-in-law, Jon A Ladd, of Watervliet, N.Y.; one niece, Ashley Ladd and her daughter, Isabella Ladd; several cousins; and a lifetime friend, Dave Whitenight.
Friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11, with Staff Pastor, Kurt Francis officiating.
Interment will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
