Sister Janet Matlak, 90, died on May 12, 2018, at Emmanuel Center, Danville.
Sister was born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 14, 1928, the daughter of the late Vincent and Sophie (Zmuran) Matlak.
She attended Immaculate Conception School in Whiting, Ind., and graduated from Whiting High School. She entered the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Danville on Feb. 2, 1949, was received as a novice on Aug. 11, 1949, and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 9, 1951.
Sister Janet earned her B.A. from Marywood University, Scranton, an M.A. in Secondary Education and Administration from Villanova University, Villanova, and did graduate studies at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. Sister Janet also studied Formative Spirituality at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.
Sister Janet taught on the elementary level in parish schools in Perth Amboy, N.J., and Bloomsburg. In 1959, she joined two other Sisters at the inception of Andrean High, a co-institutional school in the Diocese of Gary, Ind. She spent 17 years at Andrean, serving as Guidance Counselor, Theology teacher, and in the administrative positions of Assistant Principal for Girls and Associate Principal.
In 1976, Sister Janet assumed an administrative post in the Diocese of Gary Catholic Schools System where she became Assistant Superintendent in charge of Supervision, Curriculum and other related areas.
Upon her return to the Motherhouse in Danville, Sister taught at St. Cyril Academy for one year and performed clerical duties at St. Methodius Convent. She was then missioned to Villa St. Cyril, Highland Park, Ill. From 1988-1992, Sister Janet served on the SSCM Leadership Team.
From 1992-2002 Sister Janet was the Director of Admissions at Maria Joseph Manor and continued to minister there in various capacities until 2012. She then became a resident visitor until her retirement to Emmanuel Center.
Sister Janet is survived by two nieces and two nephews and their families.
Services for Sister Janet will take place on Friday at Maria Hall. The arrival of the body followed by recitation of the Rosary is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The Wake service is at 11:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m.
