Ruth Anna Zimmermann, 88, formerly of 121 Linden Road, Lewisburg, passed away June 2, 2018, at 5:20 p.m. at her residence of 188 Old House Road, Ridgeland, S.C.
She was born to the late Harry M. and Helen G. (Young) Billmeyer, and grew up in Potts Grove.
Ruth was a 1947 graduate of Milton High School and Mansfield State Teachers College/Cornell University in 1951.
She taught Home Economics at the West Chillisquaque High School until 1958, while managing the cafeteria and the girls' softball team. She loved her students, teaching and cooking and her good memories of those days stayed with her all of her life.
She was introduced to her beloved husband of 61 years, Robert Thomas Zimmermann, by mutual friends, Bill and Ginny Mutschler of Lewisburg. Ruth and Bob were married June 2, 1957, in St. John's Lutheran Church, Potts Grove, by the late Rev. Myles R. Smeltz.
Ruth's ancestors were Union County pioneers, and she loved her community. Ruth was very active in the D.A.R. Shikellimo Chapter, the Lewisburg Christian Women's Club, Civic Club, and Ramblers Club. She and her husband had been members of the Winfield Baptist Church for more than 47 years, and taught in vacation Bible schools. Ruth also supported Child Evangelism Fellowship and conducted Good News Clubs for many children throughout her life. She was devoted to her family and friends, graciously giving of herself to all.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Robert; her son, Glenn W. Zimmermann of Harrisburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann L. and Rev. Nathaniel Fishburne Sr., of Ridgeland, S.C.; a grandson, Gunnar H. Gray and granddaughter, Laura B. Gray; her sister, Mary Ellen Morrison of Montandon; sister-in-laws, Margaret Spielman of Bloomsburg, and Dorothea Hazelton of Lauderhill, Fla.; and many extended family members.
Friends and relatives will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg. A funeral service and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Lewisburg Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. John H. Shaw III officiating.
