Ruth Haire Knechel, 91, of Lewisburg, passed away at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2017, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
She was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Kelly Township, a daughter of the late Robert and Caroline (Herman) Hafer. She was preceded in death by Harry F. Haire after 28 years of marriage in 1973, and by her second husband of three years, Frank A. Knechel in 2000.
Ruth was a 1944 graduate of Lewisburg Area High School.
Earlier in life she had been employed at Rea and Derricks, J.J. Newberry, Donehower's Sporting Goods, and retired from the Union County Courthouse.z
She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church (Twin Churches), Lewisburg.
Ruth liked taking trips with friends, bowling, yard sales, and rides in the mountains, but most recently she enjoyed playing bingo and singing in the choir. She will be greatly missed by her family, sons, Larry F. Haire and wife, Patricia, of Lewisburg, and Thomas "Tom" Haire and his wife, Gloria, of Middleburg; son-in-law, Patrick Fallon, of Watsontown; grandchildren, Patrick T. Fallon and his partner, Christine Wilson, of Watsontown, Lindsey L. Boyer and husband, Rusty, of New Columbia, Jennifer A. Bower and husband Nick, of Lewisburg, Melissa A. Cooper and husband, Daniel, of Pittsburgh, Tessa Lyons, of Mifflinburg, and Ashley Haire and her partner, Clinton Prather Jr., of Harrisburg; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy L. Fallon; and two brothers, Elmer and Harold Hafer.
Friends and family will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg, followed by the funeral at 2, with the Rev. John E. Lee officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, New Columbia.
The family will provide flowers and asks that memorial contributions in Ruth's memory be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
