Robert's Story

Text size

Robert G. Gessner, 82, of Route 104, Mount Pleasant Mills, went to his Heavenly home surrounded by his family on Friday morning, May 5, 2017, at his home.

He was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Herndon, a son of the late Charles and Carrie (Strausser) Gessner. On May 29, 1954, he married the former Orpha M. Benfer, who survives.

Bob attended Mahanoy Joint High School. He had been employed at the East Malta Dairy, Glen Gery Brick Co., Harrisburg, and retired in 1997 from Wood-Mode, Kreamer.

He was a member of the Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church where he served on the church board and the cemetery board.

Robert took pride in working hard and instilled that value in his children. He enjoyed hunting with his family, and hand crafting projects in his wood shop, including special momentos for his children and grandchildren. One of Pap's favorite past times was interacting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending their sporting events. Another of Bob's interests was antique cars. An accomplishment that he was very proud of was completely restoring a 1931 Ford Model A Town Sedan. Bob also greatly enjoyed talking Dutch.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years, are four children and their spouses, Robert and Luann Gessner, Steven and Lorna Gessner and Tina Spatz, all of Richfield, and Jeffrey and Dana Gessner, of Mount Pleasant Mills; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Heather and Ed Jamison, Bethany and Jarrod Rasey, Carolyn and Levi Neimond, Allison and Tim Hornberger, Maddie Gessner, Kyle and Summerlee Gessner, Jordan Wenrich and her fiance Koby Garman, Brynn Wenrich, Colby and Amy Spatz, and Brenyn Spatz; 14 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Tate, Briar, Piper, Caden, Ella, Charlotte, Mazie, Nash, Ryder, Nevin, Weston, Molly and Tristan; four sisters, Marie Lenker, of Millersburg, Catherine Lenker, of Dalmatia, Leah Gessner, of Herndon, and Shirley and Tim Lawrence, of Ohio; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Floyd and Jean Gessner, of Colorado and Marlin and Ruth Gessner, of Ohio, Elva Gessner, of Sunbury and Alma Gessner, of Herndon.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister, Jim, Charles, John, Harlan, Fairvin, and an infant sister, Naomi; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Lenker.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church, Route 35, Richfield, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday followed by the funeral with the Rev. Aaron McCarty and Rev. Nick Rine officiating.

Burial will follow in the Richfield Union Cemetery.
