Richard O. Benner, 83, of Mount Pleasant Mills, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born at home on June 15, 1934, in Snyder County, a son of the late Howard L. and Mabel M. (Minium) Benner.
Richard graduated from Freeburg High School and served in the Air Force from 1953 to 1961. While in the Air Force, he met his beloved wife, the former F. Carolyn Christie of Valdosta, Ga., who preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 2015. The couple were married for 60 years at the time of her passing. He also attended school in Americus, Ga., for television repair.
Richard had many careers over his lifetime. He was a television repairman, a contractor with his brother Oscar, and at Irvin's Craft Shop working in the gallery, framing memories.
His favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of the birthday parties. He also enjoyed going out for breakfast with his siblings on Saturday mornings.
Richard is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Christa E. and Alan L. Kerstetter and Patricia A. and Max G. Hollenbach; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Carla Kerstetter, Chadwick and Lori Kerstetter, Christopher and Kimberly Kerstetter, April and Brandon Mook, Eric and Kendra Hollenbach, Craig and Kristin Hollenbach; 14 great-grandchildren, Zachary and his wife Kaylyn, Luke, Brianna, Cayden, Kole, Conor, Bryleigh, Gordon, Ayden, Alexis, Avery, Jeremiah, Allison and Caleb; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Oscar and Shirley Benner and Howard and Sharon Benner; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther and Louis Shaffer and Betty and Donald Howell; a brother-in-law, James Heintzelman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Annette Benner in infancy; and one sister, Bernice Heintzelman.
Friends and family are invited to the visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, followed by the funeral at 11, at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills, with Pastor Debra J. Dailey officiating.
Burial with full military honors accorded by the American Legion Victory Post No. 25 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631 of Selinsgrove will be in Daniel's/St. Thomas Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills.
