Nevin's Story

Nevin E. Mensch Jr., 81, of Milton, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017, at UPMC Williamsport Hospital.

Born in Milton on April 23, 1936, he was the son of the late Nevin E. Mensch Sr. and Evelyn (Wix) Campbell. He was married to the former Nancy (Rice) Egger. His death breaks a marital union of 17 years.

Nevin was a 1954 graduate of Milton High School and had served in the Navy.

He had worked in the trucking industry for many years, retiring in 1997. In 1971 he opened Mensch Trucking in Philadelphia then moved to Milton. After returning to Milton, he opened the Milton 32 Truck Stop along Route 80 in 1978.

He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion, VFW, F & A Masons, Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks, and a life member the Susquehanna Motorcycle Club, all of Milton, and the Shortway Antique Truck Club of Orangeville. While a member of the Legion and VFW he had served many different posts most notably as past commander of both. He also enjoyed helping with the Milton Harvest Parade committee.

In 1983 he was recognized by the Milton Standard as a Distinguished Citizen of the Lower West Branch of the Susquehanna Valley.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Nevin Mensch III, Christopher Mensch and Blaine Mensch, all of Milton; three stepsons, Tim Egger and his wife Janet, of Michigan, Trace Vonada and his wife Joyce, of North Carolina, and Brad Vonada; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry Mensch and his wife Connie, of Milton; a sister Judi Hartman and her husband Richard, of Milton; and his special caregiver, Alicia Berkheimer, of Milton.

Friends and relatives will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1125 Mahoning St., Milton, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven Middernacht officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Milton.

Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton.
