N. Irene John, 95, of Kelly Apartments, Lewisburg, passed away on Sept. 7, 2018.
Irene spent the last year living with her son Terry in Holly, Mich. She passed at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., after a brief illness. Irene moved to Lewisburg in 1992 having lived in Michigan for 30 years.
She was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Drums, a daughter of the late Herman and Nellie Kauffman of Millville, Pa.
Irene was a graduate of Catawissa High School and attended the Western Union School of Telegraphy in Washington, N.J.
She was a switchboard operator in Washington during World War II. She retired from the Livonia Medical Clinic in 1992, where she was the head of the medical records department.
While in Michigan, she was very active with many organizations including Order of the Eastern Star, Boy and Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, Redford Township Musical Society, Livonia Garden Club and organized a singles group in her church called "The Voyagers."
In Lewisburg she was on the Milton Auxiliary and volunteered at Evangelical Community Hospital with more than 3,000 hours.
Irene's hobbies were gardening, crossword puzzles and reading.
She is survived by two sons, Terry P. John of Holly, Mich., and Randy L. John of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; three grandchildren, Dr. Tracey Hashemi of Illinois, Jennifer John of Michigan, and Chris John of Florida; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters, Harry Kauffman of California, William Kauffman of North Carolina, Jane Henrie, Naomi Frantz and Mary Laubach, all of Pennsylvania.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
